FAQ: Stock Market: Earnings and Dividends

Back to FAQ Contents

What are Earnings?

If you post a tweet, post a Facebook item on your wall, upload a photo to Instagram, and so forth, we pay you in Eaves every day. These activity payments are called 'earnings'. Earnings for each network (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc.) are capped, so extremely high activity will not result in more Earnings.

What are Dividends?

On Empire Avenue we pay you daily for the shares you own in someone! How it works:

  • You buy shares in John Smith
  • John Smith posts on Twitter and Facebook, uploads stuff to Instagram and YouTube throughout the day
  • Based on John's activity and engagement in those networks, we create a pool of Eaves (our virtual currency) once a day
  • We take that pool and we divide it among John's shareholders, based on the number of shares each user owns.
  • If you want to be a wise investor, buy shares in people who have great engagement (Network Scores)!

  • Please note: Average daily dividend payout shown on profiles is an estimation only!

How are Earnings & Dividends calculated?

Your earnings and dividend payout for each network depends on three factors:

    1. Your daily activity on that network (tweets, posts, photos, videos...)
    2. Your audience’s reaction to that activity (in the form of likes, comments, retweets, shares, favorites...)
    3. Your Network Score on that network (Network Scores are based on a several-week-lookback measurement of your activity and audience on that network.)
Please note: Beyond 5,000 investments (you may upgrade your portfolio size in the Empire Avenue Shop), we limit the number of profiles paying you dividends daily from the Top 5,000 in your portfolio based on their average dividends per share and your shareholdings in them.

To maximize your earnings and dividend payouts, you should:
    • Empire Avenue: Login and do some transactions (even if you just buy or sell one or two users) regularly. Create Missions, send shareholder mail and be active in your communities, and get others to respond to your posts.
    • Facebook, Facebook Pages: Post statuses. The more comments and likes you get on those statuses, the better.
    • Twitter: Post tweets. The more people retweet you, the bettter.
    • Flickr: Post photos. You don’t need to post 200 photos every day, just get people to interact with the ones you do post through their comments and favorites.
    • YouTube: Post Videos. Again, no need to post 20 videos a day, just get people to interact with the ones you do post through their comments and favorites.
    • Foursquare: Check in to locations. Busy, verified locations (like those with specials) are worth much more than frivolous ones like “my basement”. Write tips, and get others to complete them!
    • Instagram: Post photos. The more comments and likes you get on those statuses, the better.
    • Wordpress: Post blog posts, and get others to comment on them.
    • LinkedIn and Blogs: Due to limited available information about these connections, we pay a lower, fixed amount for Blogs and LinkedIn.
    • All Networks: Your earnings and dividends will increase as you increase your Network Score. Your Network Scores are based on the above factors, but over several weeks rather than just over the last day or two. They also depend on your audience size, so increase the number of your followers, friends, or whatever, and your payouts will gradually increase.

The Dividend I receive suddenly went to zero. What happened?

There are two likely explanations: If you are inactive (no login, buy or selling of shares, or posting of shoutouts/messages) for 30 days, you will stop receiving dividends BUT inactive accounts continue to pay out Dividends to their Shareholders. The moment you login again or do a share buy or sell, your received dividend should return to normal during the next daily close. Occasionally, a server issue may delay the payment of daily dividends and you may receive a report that your dividend payment was zero. Usually the payment is just late and you will receive it later in the day.

I normally receive 25,000e a day in Dividends, but when I logged in this morning I only had 15,000e more than when I logged out last night. Why?

Dividends are not paid in a single lump sum but over several hours, normally starting early in the morning East coast USA time. This process can take several hours; occasionally it is slow and can take much of the day. So in a situation like this it is most likely that your dividends have not finished paying out yet.

Please go to your Bank: http://empireavenue.com/profile/money/ and choose Dividend Earnings to see how your Dividends are coming in

Are the Dividends I pay to my Shareholders based on whom I invest in?

No. There is no direct relationship between the Dividends you pay out and whom you invest in. Dividends you receive ,of course, are related to whom you invest in. Obviously investing in great people will create great personal reciprocal networks and activity and engagement with you which can result in increased dividend payouts to others!

Why does Facebook connections sometimes get reset?

When you authorize Empire Avenue to connect to your Facebook account, you give us an offline access token to your Facebook account. That allows us to fetch your feed data, so that we can analyze your network value and add to your Share Price. Should that token change, Empire Avenue loses connection to your Facebook account. When that happens, it is effectively as if you had never connected Facebook. Within a couple of days your Share Price will fall due to this. We send out an automatic e-mail after a day of being unable to contact Facebook through your token, and then automatically disconnect and remove your data.

Should you get an email stating, "Important: Your Facebook Connection Inactive" please come back and reconnect your Facebook. Go to your (My Connections) page and reconnect, or if you use "Facebook Login" simply login and we will automatically reconnect. Please note: We have discovered that changes to passwords within Facebook will automatically invalidate tokens given to applications by Facebook.

Why does Facebook Page connections sometimes get reset?

Please read above on Facebook tokens. Even if you haven't connected a Facebook account, what happens to your Facebook account affects the token that Facebook gives us to access Facebook Pages. If your Facebook gets disconnected or you make a substantial change to your Facebook Account (like change passwords), assume immediately that your Facebook Page is also disconnected. Within a couple of days your Share Price will fall due to this. Go to your "My Connections" page and reconnect or disconnect and connect your Facebook Page. We send out an automatic e-mail after a day of being unable to contact Facebook through your token and then automatically disconnect and remove your data. We show that your Facebook Page is disconnected with a red exclamation mark where your Facebook Page Network Score is when you login to Empire Avenue.

Do RSS Feeds count towards Share Price or Earnings?

No. Only RSS Feeds which have been upgraded to Blog Status contribute a small amount towards Share Price and Earnings. This may decrease further in future.

Can I add Pinterest as a connection?

Currently, Pinterest has not released an API - that's the application that allows us to get information about your account activity. Until they do, we cannot offer Pinterest as an Empire Avenue social media connection.
